Tony Gonzalez is a former American football tight end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 17 seasons. Born on February 27, 1976, in Torrance, California, Gonzalez grew up in Huntington Beach and attended Huntington Beach High School. He was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing football, basketball, and baseball. After high school, Gonzalez attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college football for the California Golden Bears.
In 1997, Gonzalez was drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played for the Chiefs for 12 seasons and was one of the most dominant tight ends in the league during that time. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2009 and played for them for five seasons before retiring after the 2013 season.

During his 17-year career, Tony Gonzalez set numerous NFL records and was widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time. He was a 14-time Pro Bowler, a six-time First-Team All-Pro, and a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team. Gonzalez finished his career with 1,325 receptions, 15,127 receiving yards, and 111 touchdown catches. His 1,325 receptions are the second-most in NFL history, behind only Jerry Rice.
Gonzalez’s impressive career stats earned him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019, his first year of eligibility. He was also inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor.

Tony Gonzalez has been married to his wife, October, since 2007. The couple has two children together, a son named River and a daughter named Malia. Gonzalez is also the father of a son named Nikko from a previous relationship.
In addition to his family life, Gonzalez is also involved in various philanthropic endeavors. He has worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among other organizations.
Tony Gonzalez’s Congressional Run
In 2020, Tony Gonzalez ran for Congress in Texas’ 23rd congressional district. He won the Republican primary and went on to win the general election, defeating his Democratic opponent Gina Ortiz Jones. Gonzalez was sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives on January 3, 2021.
Gonzalez’s congressional run was not his first foray into politics. In 2012, he endorsed Mitt Romney for president and spoke at the Republican National Convention.
