Audie Murphy was born on June 20, 1925, in Kingston, Texas. He was one of twelve children born to poor sharecroppers. As a child, he had to work in the fields to help his family make ends meet. Despite his humble beginnings, he was an excellent marksman and developed a love for hunting and fishing.

Because of his bravery and leadership skills, he was quickly promoted through the ranks. He became a sergeant at the age of 19, a second lieutenant at the age of 20, and a first lieutenant at the age of 21. He was one of the youngest and most decorated soldiers in the history of the United States Army.
